Senior Threat Researcher


We have a fantastic opportunity here at SophosLabs for a Senior Threat Researcher to join our global Behaviour Protection Team - our highly skilled team of security experts deliver proactive behaviour-based protection & system cleaning against Windows malware.


You will be passionate about discovering & defeating the tactics threat actors use and abuse to persist, embed & hide their nefarious activities on targeted systems. You will take a keen interest in emerging technologies and apply creative & adversarial thinking to problem solving.

As a Remediation Specialist in the Behaviour Protection Team, you will be involved in and take the lead in:


  • Reverse engineering and debugging malware, understanding the complete end-to-end kill chain, from attack vector to persistent payload
  • Identifying new tactics & techniques used to implant malicious code in targeted systems
  • Data mining to discover emerging patterns and thwart attacks using cloud-assisted technology
  • Working with product & data science teams to build features, processes & tools to cope with the rapidly evolving threat landscape


Key responsibilities:


  • Monitor & update cloud-assisted remediation system to remove prevalent attacks from affected machines
  • Analyse top malware & potentially-unwanted application infections for new persistence tactics
  • Develop algorithms & data-driven processes to measure & continuously improve malware cleanup
  • Consult with development teams to enhance remediation features in Sophos products
  • Publish blog articles and/or whitepapers on threat research


Skills & experience required:


The successful candidate has extensive knowledge of Windows internals, is fluent in assembly, and has a knack for getting to the bottom of any issue. You enjoy thinking creatively; combining your deep technical knowledge, your tenacity for innovation, and your can-do attitude to solve complex and challenging problems on a daily basis.


  • Bachelor degree in Computer Software (Computer Security preferable)
  • Experience in computer security field/role
  • Proficient in Windows debugging of hostile code
  • Detailed knowledge of Windows operating system internals
  • Excellent grasp of compilers & disassembly
  • Reverse engineering using IDA Pro
