Job Purpose

SophosLabs is recruiting a Senior Threat Researcher to join our global team of highly skilled security experts to help secure and protect Sophos users and their systems worldwide from threats such as malware, exploits, spam and phishing.
SophosLabs is a global network of highly skilled and trained analysts and IT security professionals that is the front line in protecting businesses from known and emerging threats.
Our analysts cover every area of IT security with integrated systems tracking malware, vulnerabilities, intrusions, spam, legitimate applications, legitimate and infected websites and mobile threats. Our automated systems work with Big Data technologies and continuously populate databases with legitimate and malicious content.

Main Duties


•    Analysis of cyberthreats targeting Unix base platforms – MacOS, Android, Linux and IoT devices
•    Reverse engineer files to discover their intended functionality and risks to customers
•    Documenting a threat’s behavior across all stages of the cyber kill chain
•    Identify opportunities and then provide threat research blog posts, articles and whitepapers on latest trends, newly discovered threats, interesting techniques found in malware for publication on the Sophos website, such as SophosLabs Uncut
•    Data mining to discover new threats
•    Triage requests submitted by other departments, respond to tasks or escalate complex issues to senior team members
•    Answer customer queries routed through Technical Support and internal queries from all departments
•    Create high-quality detection for threats
•    Build, test and publish detection data files
•    Develop internal research and / or automation tools to facilitate threat analysis, threat hunting, telemetry processing, explore other innovative ways to further improve our capability to combat cyber threats
•    Research and prototype new malware detection techniques


Skills & Experience



•    Proven problem-solving skills with an inquisitive nature
•    Proven ability to prioritize and organize assigned tasks
•    Possess an analytical and methodical approach to workflow
•    Good written and verbal communication skills
•    Ability to work both independently and as part of a global team
•    Understanding of a wide range of executable file formats (ELF /DWARF/PE/DEX/Mach-O)
•    Experience with a wide array of Internet technologies and protocols (HTML, JavaScript, SMTP, DNS)
•    Coding skills (C/C++, Assembler, Python/Perl)
•    Deep understanding of the Unix OS architecture
•    Reverse-engineering executable binaries, both statically via disassembling and dynamically via debugging
•    Good experience with x86/x64/ARM assembler
•    Experience in researching and reverse engineering Linux malware using tools such as IDA Pro or radare2 disassembler and gdb / lldb debuggers
•    Experience with Linux system calls and system tracing, such as events/tracepoints/capabilities
•    Experience with dynamic sandboxing
•    Experience with honeypots and sinkholes
•    Experience with a broad range of operating systems
•    Proven experience with publishing technical blogs, articles, whitepapers, presenting at both domestic and international cyber conferences
•    Bachelor’s degree in Computer Software (or equivalent)



•    Programming skills and experience in Golang
•    Understanding of internal structure of executable files produced by various compilers, such as Golang compiler
•    Machine Learning experience, such as supervised classifiers built with Keras / Tensorflow
