Job Purpose:

As an integral member of the Sophos Support organization, the Senior Technical Writer is part of a small team that works on a wide range of security software. They will work closely with subject matter experts from Product management, Engineering, and Technical support to research and write product Help and manuals, and publish them online. Apart from this day-to-day project work, the Technical Writer also helps to develop our long-term strategy for documentation, looking at better ways to re-use and deliver content. No management or programming experience required.


Main Duties:

  • Plan, write and maintain user assistance in various forms, including online Help and documents.
  • Learn about products by working with developers, reading internal documentation, and using the software.
  • Write conceptual or task-based content for specific audiences.
  • Design or source diagrams, charts or videos that can be included in user documentation.
  • Collaborate with the localization team to ensure that documents are suitable for translation.
  • Ensure that developers and managers review, test and approve documents.
  • Contribute to maintaining and updating our standards for terminology and style.
  • Contribute to the text or messages in product interfaces.


Skills & Experience:

  • Degree in English, Communications or Computer Science.
  • A minimum of 2 years of technical writing experience.
  • CCNA or Network+ certification or higher.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to grasp and analyse complex procedures and make them easily understandable.
  • Ability to work independently, plan own schedules, and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Ability to gather information from software developers and support staff. 
  • Experience with team collaboration tools, version control systems, and release tracking tools (Confluence, Git/Bitbucket, and Jira)
  • Experience with DITA, XML or Markdown desirable.
