Lab Assistant

Job Purpose:

The Test Lab Assistant will build and manage the lab environment used for testing Sophos hardware and software products. This individual will apply his/her skills in systems administration and network administration to support the testing needs of the development teams and the broader organization. Along with technical skills, the position requires someone who can maintain careful documentation and keep the extensive lab inventory current.


Main Duties:

  • Build and maintain the lab infrastructure to support testing of security product effectiveness, performance, and usability.
  • Maintain and monitor health status of lab devices .
  • Evaluate network and implement ways to improve.
  • Procure and maintain lab inventory and license.
  • Work with engineering, QA, and the rest of the NSG team to develop environments for testing.
  • Ensure that the lab meets both availability (e.g., remote access) and security (e.g., isolation of malware testing) requirements.
  • Ensure regular backups and security of lab network devices.
  • Maintain and monitor Network consistency by installing and maintain networking monitoring.
  • Upgrade and maintain lab devices.
  • Quick troubleshoot on network issues and provide solution to prevent in future.
  • Automate repetitive task on daily activities.
  • Support the development teams and other functions within Sophos in accessing the lab and performing product testing.


 Experience & Skills

  • Hands-on experience installing and configuring a wide variety of servers, storages, operating systems, security appliances, and applications.
  • Thorough understanding of networking concepts, such as VLANs, IP routing (IPv4 and IPv6), and firewall rules.
  • Experience with virtualized environments. VMware is a must, Proxmox would be ideal.
  • Working knowledge of a scripting language (preferably Python) and a configuration management tool (preferably Ansible), especially as it applies to systems administration and testing.
  • Experience working in QA or a similar testing environment highly desirable.
