Role Summary

As a member of the Application Security team, the Senior Software Engineer works closely with other engineers to help build security tooling in support of Sophos product and engineering teams.


This person should be familiar with building security-centric software in service of other engineers.


We seek a top-performing engineer with the passion, experience, and gravitas to effectively influence and contribute to this critical technology function. The ideal candidate will be a high energy, team oriented, customer driven problem solver with prior experience building security tooling for developers inside of enterprises and participating in open source.

What You Will Do

  • Participate in the design, architecture, and development of security tooling software in service of Sophos product and engineering teams
  • Help in future open-source efforts within the Application Security team
  • Write strong documentation for developed technology
  • Work with members of the Application Security team to identify areas in which new tools could be built
  • Help in triaging and addressing flaws in tooling that is developed and owned by the Application Security team
  • Write strong unit and end-to-end testing
  • Participate in discussions within and outside of the team


What You Will Bring

  • Expert level proficiency with Golang or Python (and willingness to learn the other)
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript or Nodejs
  • Minimum of 2 years working as a Senior Software Engineer
  • Strong current or former open-source contribution experience (maintainer experience is a plus)
  • Experience with GitHub
  • Experience mentoring other engineers
  • Experience leveraging AWS services programmatically (SDK) such as SQS, DynamoDB, in the context of software development
  • Experience working with various database technologies, SQL and NoSQL
  • Strong understanding of developing command-line (CLI) tools
  • Strong understanding of developing tools for consumption within continuous integration (CI) pipelines
  • Strong experience in developing standards-compliant RESTful API interfaces
  • Experience in leveraging crypto libraries such as sodium, argon2id, bcrypt, etc
  • Expert understanding of Software development principles.
  • Experience with application security concepts and standards (OWASP, etc)
  • Familiarity with Threat Modeling and Secure Development in general.
  • Understanding of how to build tools that will be consumed by other development teams.
  • Excellent in verbal and written communication, and able to constructively discuss and convey differing ideas, approaches, and perspectives, particularly in written communications.
  • Eagerness to learn the world of Internet security and the Sophos product suite.

Ideally You Will Bring

  • Experience with Agile Software Development methodologies
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipeline tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Terraform, etc.
  • Strong Linux/Unix systems experience
  • Contributions to open-source security projects and/or publications
  • Working knowledge of NodeJS or JavaScript
  • Experience building chatbots
  • Working knowledge of no-code tools such as Retool, Bubble, or similar
