Job Purpose
The Senior Development manager works closely with the Director of Sophos Data Platforms and with the Product Management team to define and execute the Sophos Central Data Platform. This role involves managing two teams in disparate time zones and interfacing with other product development leaders across Sophos.


Main Duties

  • A great understanding of technologies and a proven track record of leading full stack teams in developing data solutions and platforms at scale.
  • Technically conversant – should have technical acumen to vet plans and designs in collaboration with tech leads and architects
  • Will drive teams to delivering success.
  • A strong interest in developing a data platform that addresses customer needs.
  • Understand the common standards/processes/tools and the ability to leverage them where possible.
  • Ability to develop shared vision across key stakeholders through developing relationships and clear timely communication.
  • Effective at collaboration in real-time to overcome roadblocks.
  • Excellent in verbal and written communication and able to convey dissenting opinions in a constructive manner, particularly written communications.
  • Focus on “what” is being done and equally “how.”
  • Will have a passion to learn world of internet security, the Sophos product set and how the data platform can enhance it.
  • Lead multiple Agile teams to high levels of performance and implement effective and efficient project management processes.
  • Provide overall mentorship to a team of 6-12 technical contributors in Burlington and London, as well as network effectively with other Sophos product teams across multiple geographies.
  • Drive decision-making processes to consensus and ensure that steps are taken to actual implementation of the data platform roadmap.
  • Participate in strategic planning and design sessions with product management, engineering management, architects, operations and development team leads.
  • Partner effectively with operations to ensure solutions are instrumented to be supported in the field.
  • Be a change agent for improving processes both local to the team and more broadly across the organization.


Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will be a high energy, team oriented, customer driven problem solver with prior experience in delivering highly scalable and easy to use applications for small businesses and enterprises.

  • Strong leadership skills and a proven track record of building high performing teams.
  • Proven competence in hiring and managing high quality individual contributors. Components of managing include attracting top caliber people.
  • Management style that is aligned with the philosophy and evolving culture of the company – a style that encourages team involvement in decision making, accountability, and pragmatism.
  • Experience building data platforms and APIs that are fundamentally easy to use, highly reliable and scalable. 
  • Experience with high-volume consumer or small business oriented solutions.
  • Experience with Agile Software Development methodologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of Java applications.
  • 12+ years of experience in development organizations, with at least 3-5 years as a Development Manager in a small to medium-sized technology company.
  • Exceptionally strong written and verbal communications skills, as well as good interpersonal and organization skills.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
