Job Purpose

We are seeking a Director of Engineering to oversee the Engineering Services organization which comprises multiple engineering teams dedicated to providing a solid foundation of tooling, systems, and expertise which enable and enhance Sophos Central productivity, quality and organizational velocity. The teams consist of the DevOps Release Engineering team, the Test Automation Frameworks and Tools team, and the Performance Scalability and Reliability team.

You will be responsible for defining the tools, strategy and roadmap for our technical solutions within Engineering Services. You will also be accountable for the successful operation and fiscal management of multiple large scale AWS cloud environments which support the daily development of the Central Platform. Responsibilities also include overseeing key vendor relationships, the scheduling and orchestrating all major platform releases, producing data driven analysis to the leadership team on issues impacting deployments, AWS environments, and daily test runs. This position reports directly into the VP, Engineering.


The ideal candidate is someone with experience leading multiple Agile engineering teams in geographically diverse locations. The Director must deliver complex cross functional technical projects with great results, high quality, and minimal disruption to the organization. Experience with the DevOps methodology, building and deploying web-based applications in AWS, test frameworks, release engineering, application monitoring, observability and troubleshooting of high-volume applications is desired.


Main Duties

  • Build and foster strong engineering teams and positive engineering culture
  • Maintain solid working relationships with internal stakeholders to better understand tooling, system, and infrastructure needs.
  • Lead Agile engineering teams to high levels of performance and implement efficient project management processes 
  • Drive the organization’s strategic vision and participate in strategic planning with product management, engineering management, and architects
  • Establish and manage critical vendor relationships. Manage software tool budgets and work with business operations to negotiate favorable renewal terms.
  • Responsible for operational processes and procedures including incident management and on-call rotations
  • Be a change agent for improving processes and driving towards best practices both local to the team and more broadly across the organization
  • Finding and implementing ways to improve AWS cost-efficiency
  • Display excellent verbal and written communication and can convey dissenting opinions in a constructive manner, particularly written communications


Skills & Experience

  •  exceptional leadership, communication and project management skills,
  • 8+ years of management experience, and a belief in developing the skills and talents of a strong and capable engineering team.
  • high proficiency in Cloud platforms and services (AWS preferably)
  • experience in designing, building, deploying, managing, monitoring, troubleshooting, and supporting large scale SaaS applications
  • working knowledge of contemporary Cloud specific technology stack
  • Good understanding of common principals related to computing, networks, firewall, security and authentication/authorization
  • familiarity/experience with quality engineering and performance engineering concepts and tools
  • experience in identifying and navigating organizational changes, a keen interest in the latest trends in engineering and leadership, and an above average emotional intelligence.
