Job Purpose:


The Cloud Optimization Engineer is closely aligned with finance, release engineering, and product teams to ensure our cloud spend and usage is fully optimized. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of cloud usage across large organizations and focus on the optimization engineering side of public cloud. As a key member of the FinOps initiative, you will work side by side with application owners, developers, and business executives to drive cloud optimization across the organization. You'll be working with all levels across the business to bring a cloud native approach to cost and infrastructure usage. Success in this role is characterized by the overall visibility and focus on cloud cost and optimization at the organization. Success can also be measured by the overall cost savings for the business.


Main Duties:

  • Build, maintain, and improve real-time cloud cost and consumption dashboards
  • Provide reports and forecasts for leadership and executive teams
  • Create cost optimization models with engineering teams that are utilizing cloud services
  • Advise software engineering teams on cloud infrastructure best practices to optimize expenses
  • Automate extraction of key financial usage data from AWS APIs
  • Develop strategies to maximize resource utilization and minimize waste
  • Track key metrics and performance indicators to evaluate the financial health of the business
  • Create a community of cost responsibility for cloud users across Sophos, be a FinOps evangelist
  • Interface with cloud vendors to drive the latest recommendations for best practices


Skills & Experience


  • Deep knowledge in public and private cloud technologies – AWS strongly preferred
  • Ability to create business cases for new technology proposals
  • Experience with AWS billing, cost management tools, and best practices
  • Understanding of infrastructure automation, continuous integration/deployment and cloud delivery models.
  • Ability to write technical documentation
  • Ability to work on multiple concurrent complex projects and to coordinate the work of others in the cloud environment.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies, rapid application development, and project management
  • Proven ability to design and present understandable and practical solutions to complex problems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including visual presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience in research data collection, analysis, and presentation



  • Extensive experience building on, troubleshooting, and optimizing AWS services
  • Specific BI tools experience (Cost Explorer, QuickSight, Grafana, Power BI, Tableau)
  • Experience at script language development, preferably Python
  • Experience with public cloud billing and purchasing options
  • Proficient with data structuring languages, including XML, JSON, and design of binary data formats
  • Experience with enterprise finance tools and processes
  • A solid understanding of Iaas, Paas, and Saas, and costs/benefits of each
  • Experience creating and managing projects in revision control, including git and Github
  • Experience implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools and systems
  • Understanding of cloud reservations, savings plans, and commitment classifications
  • Experience with Agile, including Scrum and Kanban
  • Understanding software development in a DevOps culture
  • A proponent of solutions using open-source software
  • Ability and desire to mentor engineers, technologists, and spread cloud finance knowledge across the organization
  • Willingness to learn in a quickly evolving field of cloud management
