Senior Technical Project Manager in SophosLabs



The role of Senior Technical Project Manager sits within the exciting environment of SophosLabs providing additional project management resource to the little Program Management team. As a Project Manager you will lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects working across the geographically dispersed 6 SophosLabs teams consisting of 240 technical staff as well as interacting with other Sophos Product Engineering, Cloud infrastructure and IT departments.


The role itself:

SophosLabs’ Program Management team is expanding by adding this new role of Senior Technical Project Manager based in Budapest, Hungary, to bring further predictability to the successful delivery of complex cross-functional projects. The ideal candidate is someone who can work with both technical and non-technical teams to manage milestone delivery schedules, drive process improvements, and communicate status to the various stakeholders. The role involves interaction with teams over very diverse time zones in the America’s, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Your projects may be SophosLabs standalone or be a dependent component into a larger company Program. You will manage the entire life cycle within a mixed Agile and Waterfall development and delivery environment.

This role is a key influencer on the success of the department to provide robust and reliable services directly to Sophos Customers.

Main duties:

  • Manage large projects or programmes of projects from concept definition to launch, developing and coordinating realistic project estimates, plans, and/or metrics, effective budget management, working and communicating effectively with relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitor, measure and communicate project progress, potential risks & delays and team performance to program teams, executives, and other sponsors. Take the lead in driving cross-team/site and cross-functional collaboration and solutions.
  • Setup and manage vendor managed project execution teams with associated processes including Quality Assurance, Documentation, Handover etc. to ensure successful completion of the program.
  • Understand products, internal tools and processes and leverage those to push automation, increase work efficiency, and drive issue resolution necessary to drive continuous improvement and keep projects moving forward.
  • Contribute to global company-wide planning processes that include budgeting, project prioritization, headcount planning, forecast management and variance analysis

Experience and Skills

You will have excellent Project Management experience, with the ability to define projects and execute within timelines and budgets with multiple stakeholders – as a given.  You will have an analytical mind and be a natural problem solver capable of solving complex issues both on your own and as part of a wider team.  Your preferred style will allow you to plan and organize effectively ensuring that the desired result is achieved in the most effective way. You are a self-starter with the ability to work independently and on multiple initiatives at the same time.  Your effective communication, both written and verbally, cross- functionally with all levels within the organisation sets you apart from your peers. You will operate with high energy and flexibility in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.  You will be able to offer clarity of direction, and leadership when working with teams of individuals, with diverse views and working styles, to resolve business problems.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • University degree
  • Recognised project management qualification.
  • Agile project management delivery within an Agile software development and work environment.
  • Delivery of small to medium sized projects. 3-6 months, up to 30 staff, covering delivery of Customer facing software/ products over a Data Centre and Cloud based infrastructure.
  • Experience of managing the full project lifecycle - business consultation; developing project plans; delivering against roadmaps; ROI.
  • Strong influencing skills and change management experience with the ability to successfully manage complexity, multiple priorities, and drive teams to issue resolution and risk mitigation.
  • Excellent stakeholder management; relationship building; and commercial acumen.
  • Delivery of projects across a variety of geographies and functions within a complex matrix organisation.
  • Experience of managing projects across a broad range of technologies.
  • Negotiation and agreement of project requirements, scope, dates and costs with business owners.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Experienced in developing relationships with technical and research staff.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with small technical and non-technical audiences outside of team
  • Demonstrated pragmatic problem solving
  • Ability to ask the killer ‘dumb’ question

 Desired Skills & Experience

  • Experience in Project Delivery using internal and 3rd party resources
  • Experience in Project Delivery managing Outsourced Service Providers
  • Go Live delivery coordination and management
  • AWS infrastructure projects (migration to AWS).
  • Working within a 24/7/365 environment.
  • Use of Atlassian tools, Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience of the Information Security industry
  • Experience of Site Reliability Engineering environments

Further information

This position does not work within a PMO. You will need to demonstrate experience of working independently within a business department and not necessarily ‘the IT Department’.

An example projects to be managed by this position:

  1. Project to provide a customer facing User Interface to submit samples for analysis using SophosLabs backend data analysis systems
  2. Project to integrate an acquisition technology/ product into existing Sophos product to quickly realise revenue ROI

The position is based in the Sophos Budapest office. The current policy is for approximately 2 days office and opportunity for 3 days home working (dependant on local and company policies).

Sophos base communication language is English, written and spoken.
