SophosLabs is a global network of highly skilled threat researchers, developers and data scientists, responsible for protecting businesses and home users from cyber-attacks. It provides timely protection and threat intelligence data and services to Sophos security products running on endpoints, servers, mobile devices and network firewalls.

The Emerging Threats Research Manager will lead a global team of cyber-threat researchers, working closely with other SophosLabs team members and leaders in Budapest and world-wide.

The Emerging Threats team is a group of malware reverse engineers who stay on the forefront of cyber-threat activity. The team is primarily responsible for discovering and profiling new attacks, tracking advanced targeted threats, assessing software vulnerabilities and hacking tools. The team members produce deep technical research publications on malware attacks, contribute posts to SophosLabs blog, generate threat statistics and present at industry conferences and events. The additional responsibilities may include updating protection against new attacks and development of analysis tools.

SophosLabs is looking for a candidate who is passionate about cyber-security research and is an experienced team leader. An ideal candidate will have a strong background in malware research or incident response in order to clearly articulate strategic directions, optimize priorities, make informed decisions and support team members locally and globally.

The extended responsibility for the role includes being a representative of our global threat research function to other engineering teams in the Budapest office, engaging with Systems Development, QA, Cloud and Product Engineering, as well as supporting local threat researchers outside of the Emerging Threats team.

Main Duties

 

  • Lead local and remote team members to high levels of performance
  • Conduct effective project and task management practices
  • Provide regular updates on team’s progress to SophosLabs management
  • Develop strategic plans and roadmaps for own area, contribute to the definition of strategy for other teams
  • Conduct staff recruitment and performance reviews
  • Defines team member career development and follow-up on execution
  • Stay on top of cyber-threat landscape and be able to represent it internally
  • Represent global threat research function to local departments
  • Leverage BigData analytics to draw insights and support metrics-based decisions
  • Contribute to other SophosLabs projects and initiatives
  • Help organizing local team events and activities
  • Promote SophosLabs thought leadership externally

 

Skills and Experience

 

  • Experience in team management or leadership
  • Experience in cyber-security research or incident response
  • Solid understanding of information technology, operating systems, networks and protocols.
  • Malware analysis skills are desirable
  • Agile project management skills are desirable
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills – ability to communicate across and up the organization
