Engineer - Linux

IT is at the heart of what Sophos do. They are an integral part of the business that has seen significant investment in systems, processes and people; and are central to the continued double-digit growth and success of Sophos.


This role is part of our Enterprise Engineering team which provides technical leadership for our collaboration, Identity and End User Compute. As a Linux Engineer you will be responsible for supporting our small but critical IT Linux assets.  This ranges from our source control systems through to our mail gateways.  You will be contributing towards out automation strategy and managing our Ansible platform which will be crucial to scaling IT operations.  You will be working closely without colleagues in Identity and EUC as we develop a Linux Desktop strategy.


Within this role you will be focused on ensuring smooth operation of these technologies across the business with a desire to see continual improvement.  The role holder will be able to support their technical decisions with a detailed explanation as to how the design was arrived at.  The role holder will lead high profile IT projects within Sophos and be expected to drive change within the organization.

Main Duties


  • Scale our Linux operations through automation
  • Support of source control systems (GIT/Perforce/Bitbucket)
  • Support of mail routing, using Postfix
  • Support of Ansible platform with IT
  • Support and train peers and junior engineers in your area of expertise
  • Support the design and delivery of Linux Desktop service


Skills & Abilities



  • Experience with Postfix, GIT
  • Understanding of SPF/DKIM/DMARC
  • Linux Distributions – Centos, Ubuntu
  • AWS (EC2, ELB/NLB, R53, VPC, CloudFormation)
  • Working knowledge of Python
  • Experience building and maintaining Ansible within a secure environment
  • Strong focus on leading projects, there execution and delivery
  • Strong understanding of DNS and networks
  • Experience defining an implementing a Linux desktop strategy including tool selection
