Role Summary:

As a Manager you lead an agile team of engineers that develop various features within the NGFW/UTM (XG Firewall) product line at Sophos. You would be responsible for providing managerial and technical leadership to the team helping them develop world-class products. We expect you to understand networking and network security related product development, and you manage your teams to achieve Sophos’s vision of building Simple but effective Security products.



What You Will Do:


  • Set the strategy for your teams within the framework of the overall company and the NGFW/UTM Product line strategy, via discussion with the Product Management and the Product Owner group.
  • Frontline people management of the agile feature teams responsible for these modules
  • Recruitment, identification of development needs, coaching, group and individual performance management, for direct reports
  • Ensure that appropriate checkpoints are set for plans submitted by the teams, monitor progress against plan through informal discussions, meetings, and emails and provide regular updates to program management
  • Identify where deadlines are not being hit and take corrective action to ensure that date, functionality, cost, and quality commitments are met.
  • Ensure projects are staffed appropriately (number and skill-set of people), and use Product Management Roadmap and project priorities to predict future needs
  • Identify training needs across the your group and authorize training of staff to ensure correct skill levels for the successful delivery of projects, and consult HR to determine the most effective way to provide training (internal/external).
  • Drive the execution of Agile Scrum SDLC within your teams
  • Build relationship with Technical Support to understand the issues with products in the field, respond as necessary to customer problems and conduct Root Cause Corrective Action to map learning back to the group.
  • One of the primary goals of the NGFW team is to build a platform and a security engine that protects our customers at the highest possible throughput with high reliability


What You Will Bring:


  • Strong leadership skills and a proven track record of building high performing teams. 
  • Proven competence in hiring and managing high quality individual contributors. Components of management include attracting top caliber people. 
  • Management style that is aligned with the philosophy and evolving culture of the company – a style that encourages team involvement in decision making, accountability, and pragmatism.  
  • Experience in building Network Security and/or Firewall applications in high performance environment. 
  • Experience in developing software using C/C++, Perl, Java.
  • Experience with Agile Software Development methodologies. 
  • Working knowledge of network stack and different networking protocols (e.g. Ethernet, TCP/IP, HTTP, VPN, BGP). 
  • 7+ years of experience in development organizations, with at least 2-5 years as a Development Manager in a small to medium-sized technology company. 
  • Exceptionally strong written and verbal communications skills, as well as good interpersonal and organization skills
