Job Purpose


SophosLabs is recruiting a Threat Researcher to join our Dynamic Protection Team – the global team of highly skilled security experts that deliver proactive behavior-based protection against Windows malware.


As a member of the Dynamic Protection Team, your primary responsibilities include


  • reverse engineering and debugging malware
  • documenting a threat’s behavior end-to-end, from attack vector to persistent payload
  • implementing behavior-based detection to thwart a threat at multiple points in the attack chain
  • data mining to discover new threats and opportunities improve protection
  • working with product teams to adapt to the rapidly evolving threat landscape


The successful candidate has extensive knowledge of Windows internals, is fluent in assembly, and has a knack for getting to the bottom of any issue. You enjoy thinking creatively; combining your deep technical knowledge, your tenacity for innovation, and your can-do attitude to solve complex and challenging problems on a daily basis.


This position is available in the following Sophos locations: Abingdon, Oxfordshire.


Main Responsibilities


  • Develop behavioral & memory-based detection for prevalent malware families
  • Produce in-depth analysis of malware families and malicious techniques
  • Consult with development teams to enhance protection features in Sophos products
  • Publish blog articles and/or whitepapers on threat research
  • Support front-line customer escalations within a local on-call rotation


Experience and Skills


  • Bachelor degree in Computer Software (Computer Security preferable)
  • Demonstrable experience in computer security field
  • Proficient in Windows debugging of hostile code
  • Detailed knowledge of Windows operating system internals
  • Excellent grasp of compilers & disassembly
  • Reverse engineering using IDA Pro
