Job Purpose

This role is within the Core Products development team that delivers cross-platform threat detection components into multiple products, including our flagship next generation products ‘Sophos Intercept X’ and ‘XG Firewall’. This Agile team builds security software written in C/C++  to run on the Windows and Linux platforms. Testing is highly automated using in-house automation frameworks and Python.  The role provides the opportunity to offer senior level QA expertise, drawing on your experience to agree test strategies and test plans for projects, and to influence and drive best practice.


Main Duties

  • Using experience and expertise, work with team throughout the project lifecycle to agree test strategy and plans
  • Perform analysis of product and business risks to ensure the test coverage is appropriate
  • Influence other engineers to ensure they are demonstrating best practice and championing the company values
  • Define, create and execute test cases alongside other engineers
  • Be involved in project planning and drive for high-value and high-quality solutions which meet business needs
    • Work with the team to analyse and understand project requirements
    • Contribute to defining success criteria for new functionality
    • Participate in defining and implementing the required automation
  • Contribute to daily stand-ups, kick-offs, collaborative estimation and retrospective meetings
  • Ensure QA ‘best practices’ are followed, working with the Development Manager and team to identify areas for quality improvements
  • Report test progress and results to the Development Manager
  • Suggest and drive changes to test automation approach, systems, coverage, and reporting
  • Work with managers to implement department wide initiatives and contribute towards future improvements


Skills & Experience


  • Effective communicator, able to modify communications for different types of audience
  • Analytical with an eye for detail, a natural problem solver
  • Experienced at building, updating and delivering against test plans
  • Knowledgeable of a variety of software testing techniques
  • Experienced with testing that is highly automated
  • Self-organise and driving to deliver quality in line with project objectives



  • Understands software security and how to test for vulnerabilities
  • Experience of testing software that runs on multiple platforms such as Windows, Mac, Linux
  • Experience of a high-level scripting language, e.g. Python
